Almshouse Admission and Discharge


Admission and Discharge books, 1864-1969 (Gaps).

Description: Books used to record persons admitted and discharged from the Almshouse. These books cannot be searched by mail or email request, as they are not indexed. They are arranged chronologically by recording date.

Content: The early records only record the date, name and list of orders granted. Later records may include any of the following: name, age, sex, race, date of admission, who committed the person, cause of admission, date of birth, place of birth, time living in US, port landed, occupation, residence, religious faith, education, civil condition, habits, moral condition, number of meals consumed at almshouse, re-admission, physical condition, classification, disease, date of discharge, number of days at almshouse, cause of pauperism and remarks.

**Please note** Due to the contents of almshouse records they are closed from public view for 100 years from date of creation.
