Marriage Records (1852-1855)
Marriage Register, 1852-1855 (one entry Dec. 1857). Description: Marriages were recorded by the clergyman, alderman or justice of the peace who conducted the ceremony according to an Act passed by the General Assembly in 1852. The act requiring that marriages be recorded was repealed in 1855. There were no other official marriage records kept prior to 1885. Content: This series contains the name of the husband; names of the man's parents; occupation; residence and birth place of the man; name of the wife; names of the parents of the woman; date and place marriage contracted; race; type of ceremony; and the name and residence of the person performing the ceremony.
